I am so into tonics right now. I make them a million different ways, with a million different ingredients. But lately, this Coconut Maca Tonic has been my go-to. What exactly is a tonic you ask? Well, it’s really any kind of restorative or medicinal drink. What I mean when I say tonic, is basically a blended drink with a tea base and a couple of other super awesome ingredients. I apologize if you were looking for something more technical. That’s not my style.
I’ve been making this particular tonic throughout this incredibly long and brutal winter we’ve been having. It warms up my insides and completely satisfies my craving for warmth. This tonic is immune-boosting, digestion-aiding, cancer-fighting, hormone-balancing, and super energizing! I know. It’s packs quite the punch. So let’s start with the base of this tonic, shall we?
The first component to this tonic is……
Yerba Mate Tea
Yerba Mate has such a huge spectrum of benefits. It contains tons of vitamins and minerals, amino acids and antioxidants (about 90% more antioxidants that green tea). Yerba Mate is excellent for helping you focus because it is a central nervous system stimulant, so if you’re sensitive to stimulants, go slow with the Yerba mate.On the other hand, if you’re trying to kick that coffee addiction, Yerba Mate is a great swap out! The nutrients in Yerba Mate may help increase your metabolism, as it helps your body utilize carbohydrates more effectively, which means that you’ll get more energy out of the food that you eat! More bang for your buck so to speak! This tea also stimulates digestion by stimulating the release of bile and gastric acid! I love this kind of Yerba Mate.
Maca is a root that originates in Peru and has some awesome health benefits, including loads of vitamins, minerals and amino acids. BUT, the coolest thing about maca root, is the ability is has to balance hormones and increase libido! Maca has long been used to amp up sexual function in both men and women. It may also improve fertility and balance hormones! I use this kind of Maca Root.
Coconut Milk and Coconut Oil
Come on! By now, I think EVERYONE knows that coconut oil and associated coconut products are just about one of the most nourishing foods we can consume. Coconut Oil has anti-biotic, anti-viral, and anti-fungal properties that make it one of nature’s most medicinal foods. Coconut milk is rich in medium chain fatty acids which are fantastic for heart health! So although it seem counter-intuitive to eat a saturated fat for heart health, this is the kind of fat your body NEEDS! Okay let’s face it. We could go on and on for months about the benefits of coconut oil and coconut milk, but we would never get to the recipe. I love this kind of coconut milk, and this kind of coconut oil.
This sweetener is FULL of anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds! Maple syrup contains compounds called phenolics, which are a class of anti-oxidants that inhibit the conversion of carbohydrates to sugar. It’s also a great source of manganese, which may help aid in muscle recovery post workout. When you’re in the grocery store looking for maple syrup, I’m not talking about Aunt Jemima. Sorry:( I’m talking about pure, grade b maple syrup. It should NOT contain any corn syrup. Thankfully, my parents have trees that they tap in their back yard and I can get maple syrup that way. But if you don’t have those, this kind is very good.
Some cultures regard cayenne pepper as the healthiest food on the planet! The benefits of this pepper are as numerous as that of coconut oil! What I love most about this spice is the crazy detoxifying properties it possesses! It’s great for stimulating lymphatic flow and speeding up digestion. It also causes your body to sweat, which is a super important aspect of detoxification! I use this kind of cayenne.
On with the recipe…
- Place brewed Yerba Mate tea, coconut milk, and coconut oil in the blender and give it a spin until it becomes frothy!
- Add in the maca root, maple syrup and dash of cayenne. Give it another spin. It should be light and frothy.
- Serve and enjoy!
