Making over my skin care routine has been one of the slowest going areas of my transition away from toxic chemicals. I used to use a commercial skin care product that actually worked wonderfully for me. Initially, I didn’t actually quit using it because of the harsh chemicals in it. I stopped using it because it was expensive! That was two years ago, and since then my skincare routine has been a bit of an experiment.
As a teen I actually had great skin and maintaining it didn’t require much effort. Even during my first pregnancy, my skin was great! Not a blemish to be seen. But then somewhere along the lines, my hormones went all wonky. When I got pregnant for the second time, I broke out terribly! Unfortunately, that pregnancy ended in a miscarriage, and my skin just never really recovered! Here I was, 27-years old and dealing with acne for the first time. Ugh…that’s just a dirty joke.
After much experimenting, my skin is finally getting back on track. I’ve found that the less I do, the better off my skin is. Somewhere along the way I came across the Oil Cleansing Method of skin care, and it has been revolutionary for my skin. One of my favorite bloggers, Jennifer of 20 Something Allergies has a great tutorial on how to do the oil cleansing method. You can find that HERE. Depending on your skin type, that still requires a bit of experimenting, but once you find the right combo of oils for your skin, it’s smooth sailing.
Along with the oil cleansing method, I use this really simple, DIY 3 Ingredient Calming Facial Toner. I do the toner about 15 minutes before I oil cleanse, and it serves as a great primer to get my skin ready to accept the oils that are to come! You’ve probably heard that apple cider vinegar makes a great toner for your skin, and it does. However, in and of itself, it’s a bit harsh for me. So I dilute it with some witch hazel, also an astringent, but much milder. If you can find it, it’s great to use witch hazel with aloe in it, but if you can’t find it, you can always add a bit of aloe vera into the mixture separately, or omit it altogether.
The third and final ingredient in my 3 Ingredient Calming Facial Toner is lavender essential oil. Lavender is known as the Swiss army knife of essential oils, because you can use it for just about anything! It’s wonderful for supporting normal skin health! It’s very important to use high quality essential oils. You don’t want to use an essential oil that is cut with other vegetable oils. That will NOT help your skin out at all.

Store the toner in a glass bottle like this.
To apply, spray on a cotton ball and apply evenly over your face. Wait about 15 minutes, then follow up with the oil cleansing method.
